Statesman, jurist, military revolutionary and politician, he fight
in various campaigns until Bolívar promoted him to General and Chief of Staff of his army in 1817. Collaborating him until the definitive independence in 1819.
When Bolívar died in 1830 and the
Gran Colombia was dissolved, Santander was elected as the first constitutional president of Colombia between 1832 - 1837. He followed a progressive line, but lost the elections of 1837, left office and continued to exercise as an opposition deputy until his death. death on May 6, 1840 in Bogotá.
