José María Cordova

Born in Concepción, Antioquia, on September 8, 1799 - Died in El Santuario on October 17, 1829

In 1815 he enlisted in the army and travel to Tunja to fight against the Spaniards with the rank of second lieutenant. At the end of the liberation campaign of 1819. Bolívar sent him to evict the last redoubts of the royalist army in Antioquia and the Atlantic Coast.   

In the battle of Ayacucho (1824), he managed to defeat the royalist army commanded by the Viceroy José de la Serna. In reaction to the dictatorship imposed by the Liberator Simón Bolívar. Cordova rebelled and organized a military movement in Antioquia, which sought the reinstatement of the Cucuta constitution, but failed. He was defeated and killed in El Santuario by the troops of General Daniel Florencio O'Leary in 1829.
